About the Album
Distributed under the Starview Records label in 1984, The Annette Funicello Country Album was Annette’s first solo LP release in twenty years. The idea for the album was conceived after her first country inspired single, The Promised Land was released to radio stations the previous year. After the single and it’s B-Side; In Between and Out of Love Again received warm reception and sufficient radio play, it was decided that a return to the recording studio was warranted to produce a full length album. Annette packed her bags and left Los Angeles, where the first two songs had been recorded and headed to Nashville, Tennessee. At Hot Licks Studio she completed ten additional tracks, mostly country standards, to create the finished twelve- track LP.
Annette told the press at the time that it was her first visit to Nashville and that she was unfortunately too busy to do much sightseeing. She did however get to visit the Grand Ole Opry House and stand on the section of the stage from the old Ryman Auditorium, which is revered by so many. She also enjoyed an Italian dinner with one of her favorite country singers, Barbara Mandrell. While in Nashville, Annette gifted the sweatshirt she wore on the Mouseketeer’s 25th anniversary show to the Country Music Foundation archives as well as No. 1 of the Limited Edition version of her country album.
While the Annette Funicello Country Album would turn out to be her final solo release, it was not her last trip to the recording studio. It was while doing promotion for this album that Annette first spoke of the possibility of co-producing a big screen reunion with her friend Frankie Avalon. The project she spoke of would bring a singing and dancing Annette back to theaters three years later, with the release of Back to the Beach.
