Below is a rarely seen short film from 1938 titled Blackie the Wonder Horse Swims the Golden Gate.
The film documents Blackie's historic swim across the Golden Gate channel, which came about from a bet between San Francisco businessman Rickie "Shorty" Roberts and Bay Meadows Racetrack operator Bill Kyne as to whether a horse could swim. Together, Blackie and "Shorty" were successful in proving Mr. Kyne wrong and their story is remembered and repeated by San Francisco residents to this day.
Glen Holt (Chairman of the Annette Funicello Research Fund for Neurological Diseases) trained horses for the Roberts family in the late 60's and early 70's. He recently came across this video and wanted to share it with you all. "It's a great story", he says. "I hope everyone enjoys it."
